Homeopathy and ADHD/Autism
Homeopathy is a very gentle and safe method of balancing the systems within the body in order to achieve wellness. Children are especially suitable for homeopathy as they do not normally like the taste of medicine. Homeopathic medicines are normally delivered in diluted Brandy but this can be substituted for tiny white pilules that are milk sugar based or other carrier medium. At the time of consultation please let the homeopath know of any allergies.
The classical homeopath looks at children not by the medical diagnosis, although this at times is helpful. They are interested in the symptoms that are uniquely exhibited by the child due to an imbalance in the body. There have been some amazing cases of changes to the behaviour and reactionability of children with ADHD and Autism through the use of homeopathy.
The homeopath will work with you and your child in conjunction with your health-care team including Nutritionists, Naturopaths and Herbalists. There is no need to stop any other treatments.
What is Homeopathy
Homeopathy (also spelled homœopathy or homoeopathy) was developed by the physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) and was derived from the Greek words όμοιος, hómoios (similar) and πάθος, páthos (suffering), is a system that treats "like with like", using remedies that would, in healthy individuals, produce similar symptoms to those it would treat in an ill patient. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathy). It works on the understanding that what will cause a problem may also cure a problem, know as "like cures like". Take an onion as an example. When you peel an onion your eyes start to sting and water. Think of a time where this has happened to you, eg, when you walk under a tree that is dropping pollen you are allergic to. Your eyes sting and water as if you had peeled an onion. When an onion is homeopathically prepared as a remedy and taken, it may be possible to remove these symptoms.
The possibility of treatment within the realms of ADD/ADHD/Autism could be assistance with a particular behaviour, draining of heavy metals and toxins or help with allergies or other symptoms. The homeopath may also prescribe what is known as a constitutional remedy which is the child's underlying predisposition and character. These remedies do not change who the child is but when correctly prescribed will help to change the child to achieve their full potential.
Scientific Studies
In a study published in the British Homeopathic Journal, Oct 1997, children afflicted with ADHD were given either a homeopathic treatment or a placebo for ten days, then parents or caregivers rated the children on the amount of ADHD behavior they displayed. Those receiving homeopathic medicines showed significantly less ADHD behavior than those given placebos.
Below is an Abstract of a more recent study published online 27 July 2005

Abstract An increasing number of parents turn to homeopathy for treatment of their hyperactive child. Two publications, a randomised, partially blinded trial and a clinical observation study, conclude that homeopathy has positive effects in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to obtain scientific evidence of the effectiveness of homeopathy in ADHD. A total of 83 children aged 6–16 years, with ADHD diagnosed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV criteria, were recruited. Prior to the randomised, double blind, placebo controlled crossover study, they were treated with individually prescribed homeopathic medications. 62 patients, who achieved an improvement of 50% in the Connersrsquo Global Index (CGI), participated in the trial. Thirteen patients did not fulfill this
eligibility criterion (CGI). The responders were split into two groups and received either verum for 6 weeks followed by placebo for 6 weeks (arm A), or vice- versa (arm B). At the beginning of the trial and after each crossover period, parents reported the CGI and patients underwent neuropsychological testing. The CGI rating was evaluated again at the end of each crossover period and twice in long-term follow-up. At entry to the crossover trial, cognitive performance such as visual global perception , impulsivity and divided attention, had improved significantly under open label treatment ( P<0.0001). During the crossover trial, CGI parent–ratings were significantly lower under verum (average 1.67 points) than under pla cebo ( P =0.0479). Long-term CGI improvement reached 12 points (63%, P <0.0001).Conclusion: The trial suggests scientific evidence of the effectiveness of homeopathy in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, particularly in the areas of behavioural and cognitive functions.
